In Final Fantasy VIII Magic is extreamly useful, not only can you use it in battles as an attack and/or defense but you can also use the Junction System to attach different magics to your character attributes, making them stronger and granting other bonuses.

Here is a list of all the Magics in the game...

Attack Magic:

BlizzagaMajor ice damage to one enemy
DemiRemoves a quarter of the enemy's HP
FireMinor fire damage to one enemy
FiraMedium fire damage to one enemy
FiragaMajor fire damage to one enemy
FlareExtreme fire damage to one enemy
HolyMajor holy damage to one enemy
MeteorMajor damage to all enemies, about 10 hits of varying damage with random targets
QuakeMedium earth damage to all enemies (will not affect if character is Floating)
ThunderMinor thunder damage to one enemy
ThundaraMedium thunder damage to one enemy
ThundagaMajor thunder damage to one enemy
TornadoMedium wind damage to all enemies
WaterMinor water damage to one enemy
UltimaExtreme damage (some 2 or 3 thousand HP) to all enemies

STATUS-
Magic Name Effect(s)
BerserkLoss of control, physical attacks only possible
Bio Poison and physical damage (if the enemy attacks you, it will receive damage, ie: it's HP will decrease; this magic can be junctioned to EL-ATK and EL-DEF and not to ST-ATK and ST-DEF)
BlindMake blind (physicals attacks will miss more often)
ConfuseMakes enemy confused, ie: attacks allies and enemies (physical attacks end confusion)
DeathKill one enemy
DrainTake HP from an enemy and use it to heal yourself
MeltdownEnemy's Vit stat is reduced to 0, enemy also incurs physical damage (this magic cannot be junctioned to EL stats or ST stats)
PainPoison, silence and blind
PetrifyTurn enemy to stone (however, you receive no EXP. Once all enemies are turned to stone, you win. If all your party is turned to stone, Game Over)
Silencemake enemy unable to use magic (makes members of your party unable to use magic, draw magic or summon GF)
SleepMakes enemy fall asleep (awakened by physical attacks, or after a period of time)

Curative Magic:

CureRestores a few hundred of HP
CuraRestores about 1000 HP
CuragaRestores a few thousand HP
EsunaCures all status abnormalities
Full-LifeRevives one person, giving him/her 9999HP
LifeRevives one person, giving him/her a percentage of their maximum HP
RegenRestores a percentage of maximum HP at regular intervals

Indirect Magic:

AuraUse Limit Breaks more often, even if HP is high
DispelStops effect of Reflect, Protect, Shell, Double, Triple
DoubleGives ability to cast two spells in one round
FloatCharacter floats; serves as protection from earth magic such as Quake
HasteSpeeds up ATB gauge
ProtectCuts physical damage by half (50%)
ReflectMagic bounces off onto the enemy (does not work on magic that affects the whole party)
ShellCuts magic damage by half (50%)
SlowSlows down ATB gauge
StopATB gauge stops for a period of time
TripleGives ability to cast three spells in one round

Special Magics:
There are some magics that only your enemies can use, and one spell which you can only draw and cast in the final battle.

ApocalypseDraw in the final battle; causes extreme damage
GravijaRemoves 75% of the HP of each member of yourparty, when you fight diablos he will use this.
MaelstromRemoves 75% of the HP of each member of yourparty, also causes Curse
